Today's Number

We are still using our Investigations curriculum and are loving some of the daily exercises that go along with it. One of the things that we do each week is "Today's Number". You can randomly choose a number or use the date or whatever, but today I chose the number 5 to do with James and then he did the number 10 in his math journal. We wrote down number sentences we knew that equaled five and he also wanted me to write down that we could count by fives. It's simple. It takes 5 minutes and it's great for building number sense.
 Here's what he did in his journal for the number 10. We talked about how we have 10 fingers, 10 toes and that we can skip count by 10 as well.
I love, love, love our math journal time. His journal is a spiral and some days I cut out a problem and paste it in and other days we work on something like this. It's fun to look back and see how far he's come as a mathematician.
